Whether a hobby or an investment, here are eight tips for collecting antique sterling and/or silver plate flatware.

1. Select a silver flatware: Style, Historical Period or Craftsman.

Picture your way-of-life and unique preferences, then come up with decisions that will be a good match. Do you expect to use your antique silver flatware fairly often, or rather use items from your collection for remarkable occasions?

There are numerous specialty areas of antique silver flatware collecting. Some collectors concentrate on a specific design pattern, while others acquire a particular manufacturer or historical era.

Some antique sterling silverware collectors concentrate on a specific variety of antique silver flatware, such as: tea pots or vases, while others have more {eclectic|varied interests and expand into regional silver flatware, such as Spanish or German, or pieces from specific artists, such as: Towie or Sheffield.

2. Mix It Up

Take a risk, acquire a broad variety of craft patterns.

This collecting tip brings great aesthetic appeal to a table setting. This is a delightful option particularly with hard-to-find, or rare silver flatware patterns. And will help for assembling a set sizable enough for entertaining your family, friends or guests.

3. Wear or Damage

A history of overuse does not always diminish the worth of antique silverware or sterling silver flatware, while signs of damage may or may not. For example, negligible damage or defects on a rare flatware piece will not significantly lessen its value. The price of a tarnished collectible should be significantly lower than retail, of course. Be cautious of buying tarnished silver flatware via the internet. Pictures can be misleading and disguise obvious wear, damage or repair. Buying tarnished pieces at estate sales and flea markets may be an an alternative, but reviewing them closely for damage remains an essential skill for your collecting hobby or business.

4. Monograms

Many collectors view classic, fancy monograms as a lost form of art and historically important. It does not lessen the desirability or appeal of a silver flatware piece when a monogram is displayed. Most pieces are, however, more valuable without a monogram. As you become more familiar with antique silver and sterling silver flatware, you will be able to identify monogram removal. Monogram removal can damage a piece of antique silver and markedly minimize its actually worth.

5. Authenticity

Some collectors downgrade antique silverware pieces that have been refreshed, such as those with replacement knife blades. It is not uncommon for antique silverplate knife blades to show signs of wear and usage. They can easily be substituted on hollow handle knives, so some collectors desire to have them replaced with stainless steel blades. But, stainless steel was not introduced in flatware crafting until the early 1920s. This is one of those sides of collecting that can be a matter of personal taste, but you do need to be mindful that your antique silver flatware may lessen in value if you alter the knife blades.

6. Repair

Dents, or general types of damage can be repaired by a silversmith. A silversmith is also skilled for replating silver flatware pieces. It can be an expensive project for common pieces, but it is fully fully worth the time and money to hire a capable silversmith for restoring valued and rare silver flatware items.

7. Modified Pieces

Be informed that these exist and learn how to detect if a piece has been modified from its authentic state. Common flatware pieces are sometimes changed to make them appear to be more rare and valuable pieces. For example, spoons are occasionally cut to resemble ice cream forks or a sugar spoon may have been changed to resemble a sugar sifter. As your skills improve, look for signs of modification and avoid buying those modified pieces.

8. Fake Antique Silver Flatware

New forgeries in favorite and rare pattern designs can be found for sale often on the Internet. Examples include:, butter dishes and rare pieces such as assorted knives, forks and spoons. Plenty of these items have no craftsman's marks. Moreover, forged artist's markings in silver have existed for hundreds of years. The age of an antique silverware piece does not always indicate it's genuineness. So the lesson here is start and continue your learning and improve your skills to reduce the risk of investing in forged or fake antique silverware collectibles.
