Use this handy search tool to find available silver antiques:

Whether you desire to sterling or silver plate flatware, the following tips apply.

1. Decide on a silver flatware: Style, Historical Era or Artist.

Picture your way-of-life and your special tastes, then come up with choices that are a good fit. Do you plan to use your antique silver flatware often, or only use items from your set for particular occasions?

There are numerous specialty aspects of antique silver flatware collecting. It can depend on the sort of collector you are. For example, some collectors show interest for a certain pattern style, while others center their attention on a certain silver flatware craftsman or historical period.

Some antique silverware collectors center their attention on a particular category of antique silver flatware, such as: tea pots or vases, while others have more varied passions and expand into regional silver flatware, such as French or German, or pieces from specific craftsman, such as: Holmes & Edwards.

2. Mix-n-Match

Take a risk, collect a variety of craft patterns.

This collecting method provides remarkable aesthetic elegance to a table setting. This is a beautiful option especially with hard-to-find, or rare silver flatware patterns. And is often a must for putting together a set large enough for entertaining your family, friends or guests.

3. Wear or Damage

A history of overuse does not always reduce the value of antique silverware or sterling silver flatware, while signs of abuse may or may not. For instance, slight damage or defects on a rare flatware piece will not significantly lower its value. The price of a damaged piece should be lower than non-damaged selections, of course. Be mindful of buying tarnished silver flatware via the internet. Pictures can be deceptive and obscure obvious wear, damage or repair. Buying tarnished pieces at estate sales and flea markets may be an an alternative, but examining them closely for wear remains an essential skill for your collecting hobby or business.

4. Monograms

Quite a few collectors view old, fancy monograms as a lost art form and historically relevant. It does not lessen the desirability or significance of a silver flatware piece when a monogram is displayed. Most pieces are, however, even more valuable without a monogram. As you expand your knowledge with antique silver and sterling silver flatware, you will be able to recognize monogram removal. Monogram erasing can damage a piece of antique silver and considerably minimize its market appeal.

5. Authenticity

Certain collectors frown upon antique silverware pieces that have been updated, such as those with replacement knife blades. Silverplated knife blades are often found with wear. They can easily be replaced on hollow handle knives, A number of collectors desire to have them refitted with stainless steel blades. However, stainless steel was not introduced in flatware manufacturing until the early 1920s. This is one of those aspects of collecting that can be a matter of personal choice, but you do need to be alert that your antique silver flatware may go down in value if you alter the knife blades.

6. Repairs

Dents, or general types of damage can be repaired by a silversmith. Pieces can also be replated by a skilled silversmith. It can be an expensive project for common pieces, but it is fully worth the money spent to Place your valuable collectible in the hands of a competent silversmith.

7. Modified Items

Be alert that these exist and develop skills to detect if a piece has been modified from its genuine condition. Common flatware pieces are sometimes restored to make them appear to be more rare and valuable pieces. For example, you may find spoons that at some point in time were cut to resemble ice cream forks or a sugar spoon was changed to resemble a sugar sifter. As your skills improve, look for signs of modification and avoid buying those modified pieces.

8. Forgeries

New fake pieces in popular and rare patterns appear for sale regularly on the Internet. In particular:, butter dishes and scarce pieces such as assorted knives, forks and spoons. Many of these items have no maker's stamps. Moreover, forged artist's markings in silver have existed for hundreds of years. The age of an antique silverware piece does not automatically indicate it's genuineness. So learn as much as you can prior to investing in expensive antique silver flatware.
