I recently bought a lighter with a nice faux-antique silver plate finish, but when I had it engraved the moron polished the damn finish off. I would like to restore it, or even take it a step further (I'm quite fond of the dirty look - I just don't want to take the silver plate off).
These are things I've tried, so do not mention them:
Saltwater
Vineagar/Lemon Juice
If anyone also knows what would do the same thing to brass, copper and or other finishes I'd like to do the same to some of my other lighter.

Liver of sulphur will darken your silver, it is used a lot to antique things and give them a patina. You might be able to find it at a craft store.

they use an acidic black oxide that stains the silver black then polish rough so the black stays in the low areas,soapy water can blacken silver plated flatware, let the lighter case soak overnight in soapy water, your body oils and acids will expose the silver pretty quickly.
